CNR penalized again for exceeding venting limits at North Sea Ninian fields

The UK's North Sea Transition Authority has fined CNR £300,000 after the operator exceeded its vent consent at the Ninian area fields in late 2024, marking the company's second venting-related penalty in the area within two years.

Why this news matters:

  • The penalty highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny of offshore emissions and venting practices in the UK North Sea.

  • The case demonstrates the operational and financial risks associated with production disruptions and equipment failures.

  • North Sea operators face potentially larger penalties going forward, with the NSTA raising the starting point for future flaring and venting breaches.
