ABERDEEN, UK --Talisman Energy has produced first power for its Beatrice platform from a wind farm demonstrator project in the UK North Sea.

An 85 m (279 ft) high, 5MW wind turbine – claimed to be the largest in operation in offshore 'deep' water – is generating electricity for the nearby Beatrice platform in the Moray Firth, 25 km (15.53 mi) offshore Scotland. Talisman will install a second turbine this summer.

The company commissioned this equipment under a joint venture with utility Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), under the Downvind (Distant Offshore Wind Farms No Visual Impact in Deepwater) project. Downvind includes 18 organizations from six countries in Europe. Funding came from Talisman, SSE, the European Community, the Scottish Executive, and the UK Department for Trade and Industry.
