NEW ORLEANS –Shell Exploration & Production Co. has begun production from the Deimos discovery in Mars basin, Gulf of Mexico. The first phase of production is three subsea wells tied back to the Mars TLP and producing 30,000 boe/d.

Deimos is in Mississippi Canyon blocks 762 and 806 in 3,000 ft (914 m) water depth.

Phase II plans depend on Phase I appraisal data and production, Shell says. Options range from additional subsea tiebacks to a stand-alone installation.

"This phased-development approach for Deimos allows Shell and our partner to realize short-term production, while gathering information in order to optimize Phase II and mature the overall Deimos opportunity in an efficient timeframe," says Russ Ford, Shell's technical vice president for the Americas Region.

The Mars Producing Unit is owned 71.5% by Shell and 28.5% by BP.
