DOHA-- J. Ray McDermott has completed handover to Qatargas of the first of three offshore gas production platforms, designated ‘QW8’. The platforms have been commissioned for the Qatargas 3 and 4 development projects.

The offshore facilities will be 65 km (40 mi) north of Ras Laffan, in Qatar’s North Field. They comprise three 2,200-ton (1,996-metric ton) platforms, 33 gas wells and two 65-km pipelines, which will be shared by the separate Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4 ventures.

The facilities will deliver gas to two LNG mega-trains at Ras Laffan, one each owned by Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4. Both trains will be capable of producing 7.8 million mt/yr (8.6 million t/yr) of LNG, and associated products. The trains should start production late this year.
