(Canada) - Petro-Canada says an investigation is underway in response to an incident that occurred on the FPSO vessel at the Terra Nova field, 350 km east-southeast of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Oily water was discovered leaking onto the main deck of the FPSO on April 21.

"Weather conditions allowed us to conduct surveillance flights on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, providing us with a very good look at the situation," says Bill Fleming, VP East Coast, in a statement.

"Based on a thorough survey of the area, including information from observers on the response vessels and from the surveillance flight, we now believe the total amount of oil that was lost from the deck to the ocean to be 3 to 4 barrels. Our priority continues to be ensuring the safety of our personnel, while minimizing the impact on the environment."

The source of the oily water was found to be a pipe downstream of the closed drains tank, which stores testing and maintenance fluids until they can be reprocessed.

Production remains shut down at this time.
