(US, GoM) - Joint owners, ATP Oil & Gas and ExxonMobil, confirm a fire and subsequent fatality at Grand Isle block 9A.
Reports indicate that the accident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8th in which there was a brief flash fire on the platform causing a fatality.
The platform was shut-in for repairs when the incident occurred. There were two third-party independent contractors on the platform both of whom were evacuated from the site, one with no injuries and one who received trained emergency medical attention before his untimely death, according to reports.
ATP and Exxon Mobil are deeply saddened by this unfortunate accident and extend profound sympathy to the family of the deceased individual.
Emergency response procedures were activated immediately and regulatory authorities were notified. The fire was extinguished and the platform is secure.
There is no threat to public safety or to the environment, and there also are no known spills. The cause of the fire is not yet known. ATP and ExxonMobil are fully cooperating with all authorities and agencies and will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident. Operations will remain suspended pending the investigation.
