BARNSTAPLE, UK– Parker Hannifin has secured what it claims is an industry-first SIL 2 approval for its HiPro ball valves.
SIL (safety integrity level) refers to the level of risk reduction provided by safety instrument functions. In this case, the valves forStatoil’s Aasta Hansteen platform in the Norwegian Sea were required to meet the IEC 61508:210 standard.
EPC contractorHyundai Heavy Industries had specified Parker’s automated instrumentation HiPro Ball Valve system for 10 emergency chemical injection shutdown applications.
The associated need to isolate environmentally harmful defoamer, emulsion breaker, scale inhibitor, and flocculant made full SIL2 approval imperative.
The valves will be used in the chemical injection system on the platform in 1,300 m (4,265 ft) of water in the Voring area, 300 km (186 mi) from shore.
According to Parker Hannifin, CSA Group performed rigorous tests on the valve design.
Qualitative and quantitative assessments involved a detailed FMEA (failure mode and effects analysis) of the valve design, considering each internal component.
It also included a physical site audit of the functional safety management system in place at Parker and a review of the design lifecycle of the product – all conducted out to ensure the valve design met the requirements of IEC61508:2010, parts 1 and 2.
In addition, Parker was asked to automate its HiPro Ball Valve system, which it managed in assistance with Liverpool-based Heap & Partners.
HiPro ball valves are manual, pneumatic, and electrically actuated to provide quick turn on-off control of fluids used in process and instrumentation applications.
The free floating ball design is said to provide seat wear compensation while the straight-through flow path ensures minimal pressure drop.
