OSLO, Norway – Shell UK has commissioned Fjords Processing to deliver risk-based approach environmental impact studies for produced water discharges in the UK North Sea.
The program relates to the Nelson, Gannet, Shearwater, Leman, Brent C and Pierce fields this year, and to the Lomond and Everest streams (inherited viaShell’s acquisition of BG Group) in coming years. Â
Fjords will perform ecotoxicology testing of discharges from production operations; provide sampling guidance and dispatch kits; and undertake computer modeling of post-discharge environmental implications.
Results will be compiled into a detailed report for each individual discharge which will then be logged with the regulators to ensure Shell complies with new guidance brought into force in 2014 by the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change.
Fjords will conduct tests and modeling at its R&D center at Flotta in Orkney, northern Scotland.
Using the DREAM (Dose related Risk and Effect Assessment Model) program, the company says it can mimic site-specific conditions, including weather and tidal data, to characterize the environmental risk of offshore discharges.
This includes produced water, monoethylene glycol and mud discharges and decommissioning sludge.
