ABERDEEN, UK – ChampionX has won two contracts to supply corrosion inhibitor chemicals to North Sea operators. The combined value is £2.8 million ($3.9 million).

The chemicals are used in pipeline systems and are deployed from wellheads to processing facilities and export lines. This infrastructure is typically made from carbon steel and exposed to dissolved acidic components such as CO2 and organic acids in the presence of water.

ChampionX’s latest corrosion inhibitors, developed over four years at the company’s technology center in Aberdeen, are said to use active components that are biodegradable, making them non-toxic to marine life.

The chemicals, the company claims, deliver an effective preventative corrosion method while ensuring assets operate safely for years, with a reduced environmental impact.

The inhibitors have been trialled successfully on a UK North Sea platform to help avoid production deferment. The second operator’s application will be on an FPSO from 2Q 2022.
