ABUJA, Nigeria -- Flow assurance is critical to sustained production levels. Tom Dujmovich of ConocoPhillips discussed the value of additives that improve flow assurance at the Offshore West Africa Conference & Exhibition on March 21.

Dujmovich explained the basics of flow assurance and cited examples of the success of ConocoPhillips projects around the globe. "Flow improvers are used throughout the world," he said, noting that they have been applied in 38 countries. Some of those countries are in West Africa.

The additives work, Dujmovich said, because they convert turbulent flow into lateral flow by reducing drag. "We change frictional losses, then change those frictional losses into flow."

At a cost of $1.00 to $1.50 per barrel, Dujmovich said, addivites can dramatically increase production at a reasonable cost.

Dujmovich talked about the new application of additives in multiphase production, calling this advancement "the Holy Grail of flow improvers."

Because additives are tailored to specific applications, Dujmovich said, flow improvers have a very broad application.
