AALESUND, Norway -- Subsea 7 plans to build a new pipe fabrication spool-base on the island of Vigra on Norway's west coast. This follows agreements with Giske Community and Aalesund Regional Harbour Authorities for the rental of land and a quay on the island.

Subject to planning approvals, the new $24.45 million (NOK150 million) base will be used to support the reeled pipelay vesselsSkandi Navica and the newly built Seven Oceans. It will be able to fabricate pipeline sections up to 3 km (1.86 mi) long and up to 457 mm 18-in. diameter for spooling onto reels. The center will also be equipped to weld traditional carbon steel and advanced materials for pipe-in-pipe, plastic-lined pipelines, and steel catenary risers.
