ALGIERS, Algeria -- Sonatrach has contracted Saipem and Egyptian company Petrojet to install a long-distance gas pipeline across Algeria. Some of the supplies will be allocated to the planned GALSI trunkline crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Sardinia.

The 784-km (487-mi) long 48 GK3 pipeline will be laid in three stretches. Petroject will manage the first two sections between Hassi R’mel and Chaiba, and Chaiba to Mechtatine.

Saipem will install the remaining 351-km (218-mi) section to the terminal at El Kala, which will also be the departure point for the Galsi line.
