CROYDON, UK -- Chennai Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (CPCL) has contracted Mott MacDonald to provide engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) consultancy services for a proposed single point mooring (SPM) project.

CPCL operates a refinery in Chennai, India which has a capacity of 9.5 million metric tons per annum. The company plans to increase the refinery’s capacity to 10.5 million metric tons per annum. To capitalize on this investment, CPCL also hopes to install a SPM facility 6 km (3.7 mi) offshore connected with a 1.2-m (4-ft) diameter, 8-km (5-mi) long subsea pipeline. The new mooring facility will allow very large crude carriers (VLCC) to berth and discharge, in all weather conditions, the company says.

Mott MacDonald’s oil, gas, and petrochemicals team based in Kochi will lead the project, which is scheduled for completion by mid 2011.
