Summary

Brownfield strategies in offshore oil and gas operations focus on optimizing and extending the life of mature fields—those that have reached a production plateau or are in decline. At the same time, brownfield operators seek to boost production while minimizing costs and environmental impact. These strategies include IOR/EOR techniques, subsea boosting and processing, subsea tiebacks and stepouts, topsides modifications, and platform life extensions. The goal is to leverage existing infrastructure, employ advanced technologies, and implement innovative engineering to enhance production efficiency, improve recovery rates, and ensure sustainability. Among these strategies, topsides modifications have become a frequent project option. Carlos Tapia, Energy Director for Independent Project Analysis (IPA), will provide an overview of brownfield developments in general and then focus on topsides modifications as a project class. The presentation is based on a wide project sample from oil and gas operators worldwide that highlight industry practices and insights from industry surveys.
