BHP acquires interest off Falklands

HOUSTON -- BHP Billiton has acquired interest in 14 exploration and production licenses in the South Atlantic Ocean off the Falkland Islands.

The production licenses are in 656 to 6,570 ft (200 to 2,000 m) and cover some 18 million acres (72,843 sq km). BHP Billiton holds a 40% interest and is the operator. Falkland Oil and Gas Ltd holds the remaining interest.
