The exploration well Chevron Canada Resources plans to drill in the Orphan basin offshore Newfoundland this July could be Canada's deepest.

(Canada) - The exploration well Chevron Canada Resources plans to drill in the Orphan basin offshore Newfoundland this July could be Canada's deepest.

The drilling site - Great Barasway F-66 - is located in about 2,350 m of water.

Chevron has not released the cost of the well but says it is expected to exceed $50 million.

The semisubmersible rigEirik Raude has been contracted for the drill this summer.

The Hebron field partners hope to drill two more wells next year.

Chevron is the project leader, with a 50% interest, along with Shell Canada (20%), ExxonMobil (15%), and Imperial Oil (15%).

The Orphan basin is about 350 km northeast of St. John's, NL.
