(Aberdeen) Dana Petroleum has drilled a successful appraisal well and flow test on the Babbage gas field in the UK southern North Sea. The well location, in block 48/2a, was targeting a crestal area of the field, both to prove up reserves and assess productivity, ahead of a planned field development.

The well, drilled to a total depth of over 11,000-ft, encountered gas in Leman sandstone, flowing 10.7 MMcf/d on test without the need for stimulation. It has been suspended for future use as a producer – nearby infrastructure includes the Ravenspurn North and Hoton platforms, although Dana adds that Babbage appears to be one of the UK's largest undeveloped gas fields.
