(Dublin) Island Oil & Gas has discovered gas with an exploration well in the Celtic Sea, off southern Ireland. Well 49/23-1, which was probing the Old Head of Kinsale structure in 296-ft of water, encountered a Lower Cretaceous reservoir sequence with a gross 100-ft gas column.

Initial signs suggest the gas extends over an area of around 22 sq km, with potential in-place volumes of 90-120 bcf. The discovery is located 25-km from Marathon's Kinsale A production platform, the only producing complex in the area.

Island has suspended the well and plans to re-enter it next year for an extended well test, to determine deliverability and the maximum drainage area. The rigPetrolia is moving north to the Donegal basin to drill a well for Lundin on the Inishbeg prospect (Island 31%).
