Statoil aims to double Gullfaks lifespan

Statoil to prolong Gullfaks production, with up to 50 new exploration targets

(Stavanger) Statoil recently completed 20 years of production from the giant Gullfaks field in the North Sea, and now plans a further 20 years of output. To this end, the company has started drilling its 50th exploration well on the field, said Tampen area senior vice-president Lars Christian Bacher at the recent ONS conference in Stavanger.

The new well is targeting the Albitt and Biotitt prospects, which lie in a proven oil-bearing formation. Both are also close enough to the Gullfaks C platform to warrant a quick development, if the well is successful. Bacher added that Statoil geologists have identified 50 more prospective structures within tieback reach of the field complex.
