(Stavanger) Statoil and its partners in the Gjoa license in the North Sea have opted for a development based around a semisubmersible platform with subsea wells, with first oil and gas due in 2010. They plan to submit a plan for development and operation to Norway's Ministry of Petroleum and Energy this fall, as well as a final cost estimate.

The Gjoa field contains 60 MM bbl of oil and condensate, and is situated 70-km north of Troll and 45-km offshore western Norway. The development will tie in the Hydro-operated oil and gas fields Camilla, Belinda and Fram B. Future discoveries in the area could also be accommodated in time.

The development as it stands will include four gas and eight to 10 oil wells, with a direct power link from the shore. Gjoa's gas will head through the Flags pipeline to St Fergus in Scotland, with the oil sent through the Troll line to Statoil's refinery in Mongstad. Statoil will operate the development, with partner Gaz de France taking over after the field comes onstream.
