(North America) - Hibernia South, estimated to hold 300 MMbbl of crude oil, could extend the production lifespan of Newfoundland and Labrador's first offshore oil project.
Extended reach wells drilled from the Hibernia platform are one potential production choice touted for Hibernia South.
Hibernia Management and Development Co. is currently drilling the first of two planned extended reach exploration wells in the area. Drilling for the second well has not yet been scheduled.
Plans for developing the southern area are currently under review by the Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board.
Hibernia's first oil was produced in 1997, and production rates now average 200,000 b/d.
Hibernia partners are operator ExxonMobil, Petro-Canada, Norsk Hydro, Chevron Canada, Murphy Oil, and the federal government.
The latter two do not have a stake in Hibernia South.
