Sakhalin Energy Investment Group (SEIC ), operator of the Sakhalin II Phase 2 project in Russia, awarded Aker Kværner a $150-million engineering contract.

The Sakhalin II gas and oil field offshore Sakhalin Island on Russia's Pacific coast will be developed with two offshore platforms with concrete substructures positioned on the seabed.

Aker Kværner's contract includes engineering, procurement, management, and project services for the two platform substructures. The company will also contribute to the project execution model in which SEIC's organization, several contractors, and the local workforce will cooperate from a number of international locations.

Conditions in the region are challenging. Sakhalin Island is in an area subject to earthquakes, and offshore, pack ice is an issue from October to May in the Sea of Okhotsk, north and east of the island. The concrete substructure will be designed for harsh conditions.

Aker Kværner has begun engineering and procurement for the two platforms from its offices in Oslo. Astor Nyborg, project manager, was selected for the project based in part on his experience with the Hibernia project offshore Newfoundland, where conditions are comparable to those that will be encountered off Sakhalin.

Aker Kværner will station personnel at the construction site, Vostochny Port, which is close to Vladivostok, Russia. The company will also supply construction management assistance to Quattrogemini, the Finnish contractor responsible for establishing the dry dock and for building the concrete substructures.
