Inmarsat's Next-generation Data Service Coming Soon
Telenor Satellite Services will be among the first to offer Inmarsat's new Regional Broadband Global Area Network (Regional BGAN), due for launch by the end of this year. Regional BGAN offers reliable, 24-hour a day Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity at data speeds of up to 144 kbps via a secure channel. The service will be available in Europe, Asia, and northern and central Africa. The service gives businesses, governments, and educational facilities the ability to extend their corporate networks and access the Internet, via satellite, regardless of the local communications infrastructure. The user will pay only for the data sent and received rather than by time used. Regional BGAN connects using notebook-sized, highly portable satellite IP modems. This new service could be effective for shore-based oil personnel.
