Prestige Sinks
SMIT Salvage confirmed that Prestige has sunk in international waters, off the coast of Spain and Portugal. The Salvage team on site was powerless to prevent the vessel sinking after she broke in two.
The Prestige, owned by Mare Shipping Inc. of the Bahamas, was carrying 77,000 metric ton of oil when a storm ruptured a 30- to 50-ft crack in the hull below the waterline. The vessel requested immediate assistance, and five tugs towed the Prestige away from the Spanish coastline. All the crew's members were airlifted to safety.
According to Spanish authorities, the ship hadn't been inspected since 1999.
