(Asia-Pacific) - Australian engineering company Clough Ltd. expects to complete negotiation on a final $170 million contract within one month for a wellhead platform for the Maari field development, offshore New Zealand.

It announced on December 12 a letter of intent for a contract with OMV New Zealand Ltd., on behalf of the Maari Joint Venture.

Clough would perform all engineering, procurement, construction, and installation activities related to the wellhead platform. Work on the project would commence immediately with practical completion expected in 2008.

Clough says the innovative design is based on its self-elevating DrillAce platform concept implemented in Australia last year.

"Clough is further developing an offshore platform concept that is uniquely different from conventional techniques, and that is particularly well-suited to remote locations. The DrillAce is proving to be cost effective and offers a lower risk solution to clients who require rapid installation without the need for large offshore construction vessels," says CEO and Managing Director David Singleton.

The field is located in the Taranaki basin, approximately 80 km southeast of New Zealand's north island and in 100 m water depth.

The wellhead platform would be tied back to an FPSO moored nearby.

Clough was selected for the project after a six-month client-funded design competition. Its design is particularly suited to the conditions and remote locality of the Maari field.
