Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn. Bhd. awarded WellDynamics a five-year, multi-well contract for intelligent completions in the Champion West Phase III oil and gas development offshore Brunei. The Champion development is Shell's first large-scale smart field and results from a seven-year experience with intelligent completion technology in Brunei.

Shell will drill and complete the wells from the CPDP-01 platform, which will be unmanned and remotely controlled after completion. WellDynamics will use digital hydraulics and Accu-Pulse control systems to operate the binary and variable downhole flow control valves in the completion. WellDynamics' SDACS well management software will operate the SmartWell intelligent completion through the surface control and automation equipment.

Shell developed the multiple dipping reservoirs of the Champion West field using horizontal wells with complex well paths. The purpose of the intelligent completions is to clean the horizontal well bores, regulate gas and water influx, optimize production, and both manage and maximize ultimate recovery.

"Intelligent wells are required in BSP to economically produce the oil rims and to ensure that adequate reservoir management of the stacked reservoirs in the Brunei environment is taking place," says Jaap Van Ballegooijen, chief petroleum engineer and discipline head for production technology, BSP.
