Shearwater expands Pelotas Basin 3D data coverage

June 2, 2025
Shearwater Geoservices says marine seismic activity was strong in the first quarter due to the high pace of order intake ahead of 2025.

Shearwater Geoservices has completed its second season of 3D seismic data acquisition over the Pelotas Basin offshore the Atlantic Coast of South America.

The multi-client campaign has to date compiled about 10,000 sq km of 3D data. The Pelotas Basin has attracted strong industry interest due to being a conjugate to the Orange Basin offshore Namibia where there have been multiple large oil discoveries in the past few years.

Elsewhere, Shearwater’s marine streamer acquisition of late has included 2D/3D contracts offshore India, a 3D project offshore Suriname and a 4D survey offshore Ghana. More recently, the company started two 4D programs offshore Brazil.

As for ocean-bottom node (OBN) acquisition, the SW Tasman and the Pearl node platform are operating offshore West Africa. In February, Exxon Mobil awarded the company a six-month 4D OBN seismic survey offshore Guyana, with offshore activity starting in the current quarter.

In March, the company signed a three-year firm capacity reservation agreement with TotalEnergies covering worldwide marine seismic streamer acquisition services, with a guaranteed minimum of 18 months of vessel activity.

Looking ahead, the company said it remains to be seen to what extent the recent oil price volatility will impact upstream investments and marine seismic activity. However, tendering activity and the pipeline of potential projects for the second half of the year does look encouraging.
