RESTON, Virginia -- The Levant basin province in the eastern Mediterranean region could hold 122 tcf of undiscovered, technically recoverable natural gas, according to the US Geological Survey’s first review of the region’s potential.

“The Levant basin province is comparable to some of the other large provinces around the world and its gas resources are bigger than anything we have assessed in the United States,” says USGS Energy Resources Program Coordinator Brenda Pierce.

USGS puts the region’s undiscovered, recoverable oil resource at around 1.7 Bbbl. It conducted this review as part of a program directed at estimating the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world’s “priority” petroleum basins.
