BUDE, UK -- BP Norge has contracted WGP and Thalassa Energy Services respectively to operate and procure/supply the seismic source equipment for the Valhall Life of Field Seismic (LoFS) project in the North Sea.

Since 2003, this program has generated 4C, time lapse 3D (4D) seismic data with an average of two surveys performed each year.

Valhall, in blocks 2/8 and 2/11, is forecast to remain in production through 2050.

The LoFS program is designed to support an ongoing water injection campaign; to improve recovery through optimizing the placement of production wells; and to reduce the cost of drilling new wells and identify new opportunities.

In 2003, 120 km (74 mi) of OYO Geospace ocean bottom cable were trenched above the reservoir creating a survey area of 45 sq km (17.4 sq mi). A portable seismic source onboard a platform supply vessel provides signal energy.

The next repeat survey is scheduled for next month, with two consecutive surveys planned annually thereafter through 2013.

Under the terms of the new contract, Thalassa will acquire the portable seismic source system, which will be made available for other programs elsewhere in the North Sea.
