KASSEL, Germany -- Wintershall plans to explore Qatar’s offshore block 4N later this year. The company won operatorship of the license, close to the North field, in 2008. The acreage extends over 544 sq km (210 sq mi) in water depths of around 70 m (229 ft).

Following preliminary depth measurements in the block’s shallow water areas, Wintershall expects to acquire 3D seismic this year and to drill two exploratory wells in 2011-12. Results of the wells will determine further appraisal work.

In 2007, the company was also awarded Qatar offshore license block 3, covering an area of around 1,666 sq km (643 sq mi), in partnership with Pertamina and Japanese company Cosmo Oil.
