SAN RAMON, California -- Chevron Corp.'s Australian subsidiary has won the rights to a deepwater exploration permit offshore Western Australia. Chevron Australia Pty. Ltd. will be the operator and will hold a 50% interest. Shell Development (Australia) Pty. Ltd. will hold the remaining 50%.

Australia's permit area WO5-13 is 160 km northwest of the Western Australian coast in the Exmouth Plateau region. This is in the deepwater frontier of the Carnarvon basin, which also includes the North West Shelf and the Greater Gorgon Area.

Australia's award of this new acreage follows the award of four blocks to Chevron Australia in the Exmouth Plateau last year.

Chevron Australia's work program for the 3,600 sq km block includes geotechnical studies, and seismic data acquisition and interpretation. The company's initial six-year work commitment includes the acquisition of 1,500 km of seismic survey data in which reprocessing will commence immediately. A new seismic survey will be conducted in 2007-2008.

"Western Australia is a cornerstone of Chevron's plans to build an internationally competitive gas business to supply energy to Australia and the Asia-Pacific region," saiys Jay Johnson, managing director, Chevron Australia.
