OSLO, Norway — PGS and ANPG have released a further 4,238 sq km of 3D seismic data over open acreage offshore Angola.
The data, which are available for direct award from ANPG through its Permanent Offer regime, is from the MegaSurvey dataset over Block 33 in the deepwater Lower Congo Basin. Total coverage is now more than 49,500 sq km.
According to PGS, the data extension covers the majority of the block, which is situated outboard and south of blocks 17 and 32, that presently produce about 550,000 bbl/d of oil from post-salt Oligo-Miocene plays.
To date, six wells have been drilled on Block 33 leading to two Oligo-Miocene oil discoveries. However, no well in the deepwater Lower Congo Basin has penetrated the presalt mega-sequence, the company added, while few wells have tested the post-salt Cretaceous section.
One confirmed good-quality source rocks with strong oil potential in the Lower Albian-aged stratigraphy in Block 33.
Upper Cretaceous reservoirs are productive in the shelfal areas of the Lower Congo Basin and could provide significant exploration targets in the outboard. Block 33, which is on the flank of the main Congo Fan depo-center, may hold the right conditions, as here the overburden is less developed and seismic imaging is less problematic due to reduced halokinesis of the Loeme Formation salt.
The Angola MegaSurvey also provides 3D data coverage over nearby blocks 32 and 34, both available under the ANPG’s permanent offer and containing the same exploration plays.
