OSLO, Norway – Petronas has awarded the PGS/TGS/WesternGeco consortium a multi-year seismic acquisition and processing contract.

This covers up to 105,000 sq km (40,541 sq mi) of multi-sensor, multi-client 3D data over the Sarawak basin offshore Malaysia.

It follows an ongoing campaign by the consortium in the Sabah offshore region, awarded in 2016. To date they have acquired more than 50,000 sq km (19,305 sq mi) of 3D data, subsequently licensed to the oil and gas companies to support Malaysian exploration activity.

The latest award should help broaden exploration in the Sarawak East Natuna basin (Deepwater North Luconia and West Luconia Province).

Rajeev Sonthalia, president, Digital & Integration, Schlumberger, said: “Modern data will be used both to enhance existing production assets and develop new play concepts in areas where legacy data has failed to provide the insight needed to find new opportunities with a high degree of confidence.”

The consortium is currently planning the initial phases and working with the industry to secure pre-funding ahead of acquisition, covering both open blocks and areas with existing farm-in opportunities.
