HOUSTONWesternGeco has started acquisition of a 5,080-sq km (1,961-sq mi) wide-azimuth (WAZ) multi-client survey in the Salina del Istmo basin in the Bay of Campeche offshore Mexico.

The WAZ-6 project is designed to provide the first 3D coverage over a shallow-water target area that includes Talos’ Zama-1 oil discovery.

WesternGeco is using Polarcus acquisition services for the survey: results will be merged with the company’s other Campeche WAZ programs.

President Maurice Nessim said the new survey should “help clients solve their illumination and imaging challenges in this geologically complex area. We have acquired and processed more than 72,000 sq km [27,799 sq mi] of new WAZ data and reimaged around 95,000 sq km [36,680 sq mi] in the Campeche basin alone.”

The company plans to deploy various advanced imaging technologies to improve reservoir continuity and reliability of amplitude and quantitative interpretation analysis, thereby reducing the pre-drill risk and improving the exploration success rate.

WesternGeco will use cloud computing power to speed up processing, and anticipates first product deliveries in late 2020.
