LONDON --Aker Kværner has contracted engineering consultant Houlder to design and build four telescopic arms for two new semisubmersible drilling rigs.

Houlder has started detailed engineering at its office in Aberdeen, and will manufacture the consignment in Scotland. The two Aker H-6e semis are under construction in Norway.

The telescopic arms should extend and improve equipment handling capabilities on the two rigs, and will remove the need for potentially dangerous manned intervention. They will provide an extension capacity of 6.8 m (4.23 ft) with an SWL load of 10 metric tons (11 tons) at full extension, allowing remote placement and operation of equipment under the moonpool.
