POINT NOIRE, Republic of Congo -- SPS Overlay Steel has completed repairs onboard the Conkouati FPSO off the coast of Point Noire, the Republic of Congo. Originally a single-hulled 232,918 dwt VLCC built in 1973, the Conkouati is owned by Perenco and deployed on the Yombo field, 60 mi (97 km) off the coast.

The unit required steel reinforcement in various areas of the hull, but the cost of halting production for conventional repairs at a shipyard would have been prohibitive.

Instead, SPS Overlay shipped mobile injection equipment to theConkouati so repairs could take place during normal operation.

"We've been doing more and more FPSO repairs recently," says Denis Welch, director of SPS Overlay. "SPS Overlay speeds up and simplifies repairs, and we're seeing a growing forward book of new FPSO business. TheConkouati was a great project for us with SPS Overlay being used both for reinforcement and strengthening/impact protection."
