South African platform construction yard opens

South Africa has opened its first shipyard aimed at offshore oil and gas production platform manufacturing. In Saldanha, 100 km (62 mi) north of Cape Town, the 220,000-sq m (54.4-acre) facility will manufacture bridges, decks, hulls, and similar components including complete platforms.

ESSEN, Germany –South Africa has opened its first shipyard aimed at offshore oil and gas production platform manufacturing. In Saldanha, 100 km (62 mi) north of Cape Town, the 220,000-sq m (54.4-acre) facility will manufacture bridges, decks, hulls, and similar components including complete platforms.

Grinaker LTA will be operator of the shipyard. MAN Ferrostaal was the general contractor with its South African partner Atlantis Marine Projects.

The facility will target West African development operations.
