RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazilian industrial group QUIP has contracted Wärtsilä to supply three main power modules for the Papa Terra joint venture’s P-63 FPSO.
Wärtsilä claims this will be the first FPSO to employ gas engines to produce more than 100 MWe of power. The contract includes commissioning, start-up and operational supervision.
All three modules should be ready for installation in July 2011, with and oil production scheduled to start in 2013. Papa Terra is around 110 km (68 mi) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in the southern Campos Basin.
According to Magnus Miemois, Vice President, Offshore, Wärtsilä: "Since the engines can run on treated well gas or treated crude, as well as marine diesel oil (MDO), virtually no MDO will need to be shipped to the P-63. This will notably reduce operating costs.
“Furthermore, this efficient gas-fired power solution will also have significantly lower levels of CO2 emissions compared to conventional technologies. In real terms, it is estimated that the levels of carbon emissions will be reduced by as much as 93,000 tons per year."
Each power module will include two 18-cylinder 50DF tri-fuel engines in V-configuration, as well as alternators and all required auxiliary equipment.
BW Offshore and QUIP signed the contract for the P-63 FPSO with the Papa Terra joint Venture partners Petrobras (operator) and Chevron at the end of January. BW Offshore and QUIP are converting the 323,000 dwt ultra-large crude carrier BW Nisa to a floater capable of processing 140,000 b/d of crude, 35 MMcf/d of gas, and 325,000 b/d of produced water. The vessel will also be able to inject 325,000 b/d of produced water.
