DOHA -- Expansion work continues at the giant Al Shaheen oilfield offshore Qatar. According to operator Maersk Oil, 95% of the 2005 development plan has now been completed, including 15 new platforms.

By end-2009, it adds, 126 out of around 160 planned wells had been drilled. Investments in the field through 2011 will likely total over $6 billion, of which $5.6 billion was invested during 2005-09.

Oil output from the field has been cut this past year to an average of around 300,000 b/d, due to production restrictions imposed by the Qatari authorities. In view of this and current production results, Maerk is discussing the future level of output with Qatar Petroleum.

In the Danish North Sea, A.P.Moeller-Maersk drilled 11 new wells last year, mainly for production purposes. Work to expand the Halfdan field continues, with further wells and a new processing platform set to go on stream in 2011.
