Construction under way of Johan Sverdrup ULQ topsides
Kvaerner and its subcontractors have cut the first steel plates for the topsides for the utility and living quarters platform for the Johan Sverdrup field in the Norwegian North Sea.
LYSAKER, Norway – Kvaerner and its subcontractors have cut the first steel plates for the topsides for the utility and living quarters (ULQ) platform for the Johan Sverdrup field in the Norwegian North Sea.
Much of the work for the ULQ will be executed in Norway.
Kvaerner and joint venture partner KBR are responsible for the 19,000-metric ton (20,944-ton) topsides, which will include the field’s control room. In addition, Kvaerner is building three of the four steel jacket substructures forJohan Sverdrup Phase 1.
The company’s yard in Stord will undertake the main construction work for the UKQ topsides with Apply Leirvik building the living quarters (Norway’s largest to date, accommodating 560 personnel) at Stord and in Gothenburg, Sweden.
An earlier study analyzed whether some sections for the topsides’ box girder and the clusters for the three steel jacket substructures should be fabricated abroad or in Norway.
Results suggested that Kvaerner’s efforts to improve costs, execution security, and quality made it efficient to assign most of the steelwork for the jackets and the 1,000 metric ton-plus (1,102 ton) steel frame to Verdal and Stord respectively.
Other modules for the ULQ platform will be constructed at the Energomontaz Polnoc Gdynia, Mostostal Pomorze Gdansk, Mostostal Chojnice and Crist Offshore yards in Poland.
Detailed engineering is in progress at KBR’s office in Leatherhead near London, and at Apply Leirvik in Stord.
The ULQ platform will accommodate the crew working on theJohan Sverdrup field during its anticipated 50-year lifespan. Following completion in 1Q 2019 it will be installed on the Johan Sverdrup field by the heavy-lift vesselPioneering Spirit.
