SCHIEDAM, the Netherlands – Jumbo Offshore has completed first-phase subsea installations for Energean’s Karish gas field development offshore Israel, under sub-contract to TechnipFMC.

Jumbo’s included transport and installation of 14 suction piles for the FPSO’s 14-point mooring system, a tie-in manifold, and a 24-in. deepwater gas sales spool.

Thirteen of the 14 suction piles weighed 176 metric tons (194 tons), while the other weighed 235 metric tons (259 tons).

On the offshore construction vessel Fairplayer, the deck layout and the two 900-metric ton (992-ton) cranes were both reconfigured for the campaign, with the vessel’s deepwater winches also modified.

According to lead project engineer at Jumbo, Joost van der Wiel, placement of the large suction pile required a special method that involved taking the pile down first to a depth of 200 m (656 ft), where it was hung off a Dyneema pennant.

“We then recovered the hook, reconfigured the crane, picked up the pile from the pennant and began the second lift down to 1,760 m [5,774 ft] deep.”

Jumbo will resume work next year after the FPSO arrives on location from the Far East shipyard, supporting hook-up and installation of the vessel.
