STAVANGER, Norway – Construction has started of the Johan Sverdrup Phase 2 processing platform topsides at Aibel’s yard in Haugesund.
Project operator Equinor has also secured approval for the plan for development and operation (PDO) from the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.
Phase 2, due to start up in 4Q 2022, will increase oil production through the field center from 440,000 b/d (under Phase 1) to 660,000 b/d, with estimated capex of NOK41 billion ($4.7 billion).
Aside from the new platform, the development will include modifications to the Phase 1 riser platform, installation of five subsea systems, and preparations for power supply from shore to the Utsira High fields in the central Norwegian North Sea in 2022.
Phase 1 is close to 90% complete and on schedule to start production this November.
Aibel’s contract for the second processing platform for Johan Sverdrup will provide employment for up to 1,500 people in Haugesund during the construction phase.
The new P2 platform will also host the converter unit (HVDC) receiving power from shore. In total the platform will weigh around 25,000 metric tons (27,558 tons) and will comprise three modules. The main support frame is under construction at Aibel’s yard in Thailand, while the converter unit will be built partly in Spain and in Haugesund, and the processing module in Haugesund.
Following module assembly, the platform will be completed at the Haugesund yard with offshore installation to follow in 2022.
Aibel was also responsible for the drilling platform topsides delivered in the first phase; construction of the converter substations for the power-from-shore solution for the field in both the first and second phases; and various offshore hook-up activities connected to Phase 1.
