Ara prospect emerges as key target in planned 2027 Bedout Sub-basin drilling campaign

Carnarvon Energy expects a new exploration drilling campaign in the Bedout Sub-basin to begin in April 2027, with the Ara prospect viewed as the most likely initial target.

Why this news matters:

  • A successful well at Ara could open a new hydrocarbon play fairway in the northern Bedout Sub-basin and de-risk additional exploration targets.

  • The prospect is estimated to contain 191 MMboe of prospective resources and is one of the largest identified targets in the basin.

  • The drilling campaign could advance both future exploration activity and renewed development planning for the Dorado project.

To date there have been four discoveries in the Bedout Sub-basin—Phoenix South, Roc and, Dorado—from six wells drilled based on modern 3D data.

Santos has also indicated that development work for the Dorado project will resume in tandem with the new evaluation program.
