Draeger detectors assist North Sea Leman CO2 injection tests
Draeger Marine & Offshore (DMO) has supported recent CO2 injection tests for Perenco at the depleted Leman gas reservoir in the UK southern North Sea.
These took place from Petrodec’s ERDA, said to be the first rig to obtain an approved safety case for supporting carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations in UK waters.
The Poseidon CCS project is a joint venture between Perenco UK, Carbon Catalyst and Harbour Energy.
DMO’s gas detectors were used to monitor CO2 on deck during transport and transfer.
Equipment deployed included the Dräger X-zone used for area gas monitoring and the Dräger X-am 5000 for personal gas monitoring
Jesper de Jong, sales manager with DMO, said Petrodec commissioned the equipment because of the risks of personnel being exposed to CO2. According to DMO, there is a misconception that CO2 only presents a risk of asphyxiation risk, but it can also reach toxic levels long before it has displaced enough oxygen.
For this project, 15 injection cycles were conducted into the field during the test phase, with 11 CO2 offshore batch refills mobilized.
