LONDON – Rolls-Royce will supply mooring equipment to two offshore drilling rigs under construction at Singapore’s Keppel FELS yard and China Merchants Heavy Industry’s (CHMI) site in Jiangsu, China.

The 12-point mooring system for delivery to Jiangsu will secure CMHI’s CM-SD1000 rig, said to be the world’s first to be outfitted with the new R6 grade rig chain.

This provides a minimum breaking load of 1,048 t, with a maximum 480-t capacity on each winch, which will in turn be class-approved according to the requirements of both CCS and DNV GL.

In addition, the winches will incorporate a new splash lubrication system for all gear trains in place of traditional grease-lubricated gears, the aim being to reduce maintenance costs and lessen the safety risks associated with grease spilling onto the working deck.

Another feature will be a Rolls-Royce E-Mooring control system with a graphical user interface and a human-machine interface. These are said to reduce the risk of incidents and accidents that could lead to failure or release of the mooring line.

The 12-point mooring system for the Moss CS60Eco-type semisubmersibleKeppel FELS is building for Awilco Drilling for the harsh environment Norwegian sector will be based on a minimum breaking load of 858 t, providing a 450-t maximum capacity on each windlass and a static braking capacity of 1,030 t.

The winches, designed according to DNV GL, Norwegian Maritime Authority and NORSOK requirements, will also provide splash lubrication for all gear trains and the E-mooring control system.

Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine won the contract earlier this year to deliver five engines and four UUC thrusters to power the new Awilco rig.
