Statoil recently spudded an exploration well from its Gullfaks C platform in the North Sea. The target was the Topas prospect, which lies on the boundary between the Gullfaks and Visund wells. The well, now at 1,100 m, will reach total measured depth at 7,000 m.
Drilling is expected to take 100 days, with the well scheduled for completion in June.
A possible discovery could be tied back to Gullfaks C.
Several other extended-reach wells have already been drilled in the Tampen region from fixed installations.
Extended-reach wells have made small oil and gas projects profitable on the Norwegian continental shelf.
