EDINBURGH, UK -- Mechanical problems followed by well control issues necessitated that BowLeven re-spud the D-1 exploration well offshore Cameroon. The rig has been repositioned, and re-drilling is under way, the company says.

The primary target is the Upper Miocene turbidite sands, which the company believes to be similar to those at the Belinda discovery in Equatorial Guinea made by Noble Energy. If successful, D-1 will be suspended for later production. Target depth is 3,048 m (10,000 ft).

Well D-1 is in block MLHP 5 in the Douala basin.
