STAVANGER, Norway --Statoil has found gas with its latest exploration/production well on Norway's Halten Terrace. The semisubmersible Stena Don drilled well 6507/11-8 in 297 m (974 ft) of water in production license 062, 1 km (0.6 mi) northeast of the Midgard field.

The purpose was to prove gas in early to mid-Jurassic sandstone (Fangst and Baat groups) in a prospect called Yttergryta. The mid-Jurassic Fangst group proved productive; the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate estimates 1-3 bcm of recoverable gas.

Statoil plans to tie the find into its Aasgaard infrastructure, possibly via a new subsea template and future gas pipeline to Midgard. The rig is staying in the area to drill a well for Statoil on the main Aasgaard field.
