YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, Russia --Sakhalin Energy Investment Co. has started development drilling from the Lunskoye-A platform, Russia's first offshore gas production installation.

The platform, on the Lunskoye gas-condensate field, 15 km (9.32 mi) northeast of Sakhalin Island, has been designed for year-round operation, even in rough seas and severe ice conditions.

The operator plans to drill to wells this year, one for re-injecting drill cuttings, and one for gas production.

The overall Phase 2 program comprises 14 wells, which include an oil rim appraisal well, a produced water re-injector, and 11 gas producers.

Drilling waste will be transported to the Molikpaq platform, which operates a zero drilling discharge approach. The same will apply to the project's newly installed PA-B platform.
