CALGARY, Canada --The Turkish Petroleum Corp. (TPAO) has started drilling the Bati Eskikale-1 exploration well in the Black Sea offshore Turkey.

The well, drilled by the semisubmersibleAtwood Southern Cross, is designed to test a prospect west of the Akcakoca discovery. This prospect is on the same structural trend, and is around 5.5 km (3.2 mi) northwest of the Akcakoca-3 appraisal well.

The target, according to partner Stratic Energy, is the same stacked pay sands in the Eocene Kusuri formation that hold the gas reservoirs throughout the area under development.
